La próxima semana leeremos esta biografía novelada del famoso forajido del salvaje oeste norteamericano Billy "el niño" (Billy the kid). Como tal, y aunque basada en la vida de un personaje real, incluye elementos de leyenda e incluso inventados.

De este modo, se le han dedicado infinidad de relatos, películas e incluso canciones. De eso quiero hablaros hoy.
La primera adaptación cinematográfica de la vida de Billy the kid data de la época del cine mudo, más en concreto de 1911. Se trata de un cortometraje mudo del director estadounidense Lawrence Trimble en la que el actor Tefft Johnson encarna a Billy el niño.
A partir de ahí, directores de la talla de King Vidor (Billy the kid: el terror de las praderas, 1930), David Miller (Billy, el niño, 1941), William Castle (La ley contra Billy the kid, 1954), Arthur Penn (El zurdo, 1958), Sam Peckimpah (Pat Garret y Billy the kid, 1974) o Christopher Cain (Arma joven, 1988), entre otros, han llevado a la pantalla las peripecias de uno de los bandidos más buscados de la historia que ha sido encarnado por actores tan dispares como Johnny Mack Brown, Robert Taylor, Scott Brady, Paul Newman, Kris Kristofferson o Emilio Estevez.
Vistas algunas de estas películas, yo me quedo con la particular visión de esta historia del genial director Sam Peckimpah en su film Pat Garret y Billy the kid, en la que Kris Kristofferson hace el papel del joven Billy y James Coburn encarna al sheriff Pat Garret, con banda sonora de Bob Dylan (que también hace un papel secundario y bastante peculiar).
Pasando al mundo de la música, Billy the kid ha inspirado también multitud de canciones e incluso algunos grupos han adoptado su nombre y/o su estética.
Por poner un ejemplo, el compositor americano Aaron Copland le dedicó un ballet en 1938. También el influyente músico folk Woody Guthrie compuso una canción en su memoria que más tarde versionaría con maestría el cantante country Marty Robbins. Y sin olvidarnos, claro está de la banda sonora de la película de Peckimpah, compuesta e interpretada en su totalidad por Bob Dylan. También Billy Joel, "el hombre del piano", compuso e interpretó The Ballad of Billy The Kid.
